One year after Jennifer Hudson turned "One Shining Moment" into a clinic of over-singing and self-promotion, CBS went traditional with its annual video recap of the NCAA tournament, bringing back the verison sung by the late Luther Vandross and restoring order to sentimental sports montages set to music.
That's what "One Shining Moment" should be every year. All the montage needs is a tinkling piano melody, bassy horns, a soft vocal, a plethora of close-ups of cheerleaders, various shots of people dancing and celebrating, quick cuts to the tournament's biggest players, longer clips of the event's most memorable plays and Bill Raftery yelling "Onions!" Throw in some literal interpretations of the lyrics (Luther: "In the blinking of an eye." Video: A guy blinking) and we're good to go.
It is cheesy? Sure. And what exactly is wrong with that?
